Dee's day with the Scooter & the Gang ,
A shocking lunch
by Vonda Pilcher on 02/05/11Well today has been a very fulfilling day. I knew that my little Tootie was in labor today, because she was panting.....but then, she stopped and just walked around. Well, here we were - having lunch --- and I noticed that she got into their little bassinet basket that we have in our dining room with a cushy little blanket in it and she layed down for what "I" thought was a nap. I got my attention onto our delicious lunch and when we got up to put away the remaining food and to clear away the dishes, I looked down to check on Tootie, and there she was, just having delivered a beautiful little puppy. Apples and Daisy were sitting a respectable distance away, just observing. It was a beautiful sight. It's almost unheard of.....a dog delivering her puppy while other dogs are in the room. (let alone, all of us having lunch, laughing and making noise) It's a wonderful testimony to how comfortable she was....of course, she is best buddies with Apples and Daisy. In fact, when I first saw that she had delivered a puppy.....Oreo's little 9 week old puppy was in the other corner of the bassinet. Well, we removed Oreo's little guy.....and took Tooty AND the basket into our puppy room....and sat down to help her if needed. BUT.....without any help needed on our part, she delivered yet another precious little guy.....so, one little black and tan girl, and one little red boy.....both smooth haired. I love doxies.
Conversations with the Squirrel family
by Vonda Pilcher on 02/04/11Well, can you believe that it's February already? My little guys & gals and I spent the entire day outside in the sun this afternoon, so very grateful for the beautiful weather. It was great for them. They have really missed the sun. (So have "I" actually)..... lol Well, anyway, today was great....we were just lazing around enjoying the day, when to our surprise, an entire family of little brown squirrels decided to visit us. I don't know if they just didn't see us because most of the doxies were sleeping or what, but they kept coming closer and closer to us, all the while I was motioning and trying to tell them in (not so very good hand motions) to "stay away"...."go back..." etc....but the incredibly brave little souls marched on. Well, it didn't take long before Daisy, (she's my neighborhood watch) noticed them....and one bark of warning and the race was on. The poor startled little squirrels looked shocked to think of how quickly the doxie statues came to life.....but just as quickly recovered and went scampering from one tree to another.....after a very harrowing encounter with the leader of the doxies right on their heels. When they finally decided which tree they wanted to stay in....they each found a branch and then began their scolding to each of my precious little guys and girls. For the next 2 hours, my doxies sat at the foot of the tree, exchanging pleasant conversations with the little squirrels. I finally coaxed most of them inside to have their dinner....(the doxies, not the squirrels,) lol . . . but Daisy and Tawny were firmly attached to the base of the tree.....they were certain that those little guys might come back down, and if so, they wanted to be the "welcome wagon." Oh, my, how I love my doxies.
A day with my neighbor.
by Vonda Pilcher on 01/23/11Well, today was quite an exciting day. This morning, as usual, I woke up and got my robe & slippers on and hurriedly took all my little guys & girls outside to go potty....but first, let me explain what happened before I let them out. Well, the poor little things were waiting patiently....and it took me a few minutes because I couldn't find one slipper, (due to Oreo's puppies love of my slippers.) So....I finally found it and quickly went to the back door, as usual, with my little darlins.... went through the garage and opened the door to my huge back yard. All of a sudden.....ALL of them went charging to the corner of my south 40. (smile) Not being really concerned, I didn't rush to see what they were all barking and charging at....usually they charge and bark at the squirrels, etc. here in our area. However, I suddenly heard someone yell....."HEY!". . . so, that spurred me on. What I saw, not only made my heart race....but it also brought a smile to my face as well. My neighbor, (as she had told me she was going to do....."I" was the one who forgot) (My bad) . . . anyway, she had her workers here at her side of the fence, and they were taking the fence down, as we need a new one.....Well, "I" forgot....but the real concern here was....no one warned my little crew of dachshunds. . . and when they ran outside and saw "intruders" on their property....well, you can imagine just what THEIR reaction was. Now, they are not prone to violent behaviour....but believe me, you would have been amazed at what a good "bluffer" they all are. (smile) What a burglar's nightmare they would be. It's been an interesting day.
Me and my dachshund family
by Vonda Pilcher on 12/30/10
So many people have asked me what it's like to live with all of my little "dachshund" family members. So...I decided to do a daily blog of their little activities. Today, was a good day to begin, I guess. Over the holiday, I've been busier than a one legged woman in a dance contest. You know the routine, shopping, cooking, baking, cleaning, sending cards, wrapping gifts and all the other things that you do over the Christmas holidays. Well, today, it just sort of hit me and all the things I did. I woke up today, so totally exhausted and almost depressed because of the extreme tiredness. After coffee, I layed down on the couch to watch the news and although I didn't mean too, I fell back to sleep. Well, when I woke up, . . . I had my entire family of dachshunds with me. They were laying beside me, in front of me, behind my knees, on top of the couch next to the wall, and 3 of them were laying on the coffee table right in front of me with their eyes staring right at me. Let me tell you....when I woke up, and they realized that I was awake, they showed such extreme compassion and love that no human being could possibly show. There's no way in the world that you could convince me that they did not know how exhausted I was, and I believe it concerned them. When I started to sit up, they waited and didn't move much. Usually, when I get up....they jump up and say, "Come on Mom...let's go outside." But not today. Today, they sat and waited until I got up....then they came to me and layed their heads on my lap, my shoulder and the couch and just looked at me - lovingly - with their little eyes of love. It moved me to tears. I never felt such love. Don't get me wrong. . . people love people....and family would give their lives for one another....but so many times, human beings are "conditional" in their love. Not so my little dachshund family.....they love me unconditionally....and they know and can sense my moods. Since I am very seldom ever depressed....this was a new mood for them to sense....but sense it, they did....and I can tell you one thing....they touched my heart today, as they do everyday.....but today was a little different. They've not let me out of their sight. Where I went today.....they ALL went. . . and were, surprisingly....pretty quiet. :-) Thank you Lord Jesus for all of my dachshunds....it shows your love for me to give me such a gift.
